Beijing Opera at my Balcony

It was not noteworthy at first, because I was just enchanted with it. Now, I have to mention it, well, because I may have run out of things to write about for the time being, and well, it is different and fun at the same time. Every evening, just after dark, I can hear someone singing opera outside. Sometimes there are gongs and chimes too. It sounds really good. Every once in a while...it just got louder...I guess she knew I wrote this....it starts in the morning.

The style is way different than Opera I have heard before. It is very snappy and the syncopation makes it sound more oriental, way more oriental. It is a cool reminder that I am in China.

In other news, I successfully told a taxi driver to take me to the Book store near three stations market, in Mandarin, of course. I was surprised when he understood me, and then we had a small conversation! Wow!

I went to the bookstore to get a map of Yantai. I have been wanting to go fishing, but without someone Chinese to fish with, I need to be able to communicate where I want to go to a taxi driver. Taxis here start at 7 Yuan, and the most I have ever paid was about 20 Yuan. You get several miles for the first seven Yuan, and then the meter starts running. The map is so that I can just point to a place on the coast, and the taxi driver can take me there. I will likely go to the special technological zone beach tomorrow, as I hear it is the best beach. Of course I don't know whether a fishing license is required, so this is just a scouting mission.
