Today was a free day, so I decided to wander around downtown. I found two guitar shops, and checked out their holdings. I saw a some fenders, jacksons, and a few others I liked. They also carry Chines guitars, which are very nice: all are in the 1500 Yuan to 2500 Yuan range: 2500 Yuan for an american Fender Telecaster is a great deal....really it is. But, I am not in the market yet, just looking to see what is around. After finding those, I just strolled around. I ended up near the seaside, and was on the lookout for a dinner restauarant that opened early: I found one. I went inside, and I tried to order Niorole Mien (Beef Noodles), but the waiter said, no. Then the only other customers (a table of four Chinese men) started waiving me over. They were sitting on mats on the floor, at an elevated platform, and they had clearly been there for a while: peanut shells, sunflowers seeds, and Korean dried seaweed were strewn about....as well as Yantai beer. I started to approach, but then they waived me away. When I sat back down they waived me back again, and clearly wanted me to sit down. None of them spoke any English, but they ordered me soup, and gave me a glass for beer. Then they offered me peanuts, sunflower seeds, and Korean dried seaweed. From what I understood, they wanted America and China to join together. They were able to understand that I am a teacher (Laoshi) at Lu Dong University (Lu Dong Dao Xie), and one of them actually lives right next to to the University. They kept proclaiming Ganbei (cheers) and refilling my beer glass. The glasses are tiny, so I could easily finish it in one gulp, but they kept filling it up, so now I am a little drunk. They told me they were ver very happy (In english), and then we proceeded to eat and drink. The one who lives near me, offered to drive me home: I couldn't refuse, because I was drinking beer, so I accepted. He later took me home, in a very kind gesture.
Notedly it was very fun, and I did not expect it all for today. They were older men, around fourty of fourty five. They all dressed nice, and seemed to be having a good time, so why not? They invited me back for tomorrows meeting of friends. I would go, but unfortunately, I have class tomorrow.
